uPuP – international group show

the exhibition uP is organized by the platform Create an Accident at metamatic:taf’s gallery space running for three weeks from march 6 and is part of Create an Accident’s annual program entitled “View Images in High Revolution”.

paraphrasing one of the most familiar expressions of the internet world (view images in high resolution), the notion of analysis is addressed to as a method of devising radical versions of reality. uP, the gesture of looking up, constitutes an action which can fundamentally fuel people’s lives and answers the request for change in the way people view and perceive the social domain.

one hundred artists and creative groups from all over the world turn their gaze upwards, permeating what is directly visible and contributing to the composition of one large-scale sky/panorama which covers the ceiling of metamatic:taf’s gallery.

every artist creates a 50x50cm pixel of that sky in their own unique way and perspective. reexamining the notion of viewing the surrounding space using the dynamics of analysis as a tool, the artworks constituting uP’s sky bring to the surface what was unperceived by the look. the new perspective is composed of images previously concealed or unshaped in a background of pixels, behind the first impression of each stimulus we come across.

uP is a large, original, exciting experiment on the philosophy of synthesis and the way the distinct identity of each participating artist retains its autonomy, while at the same time constituting part of a single unique artwork. a work of art, which simultaneously devises, reforms and redetermines the relationship with one’s self and the world around us.

opening: 6.3.2014, 20.30

duration: 6.3. – 28.3.2014

venue: metamatic:taf | 5 normanou str. athens

curation: dinos nikolaou – iphigenia papamikroulea

special event: The exhibition will close with a live performance by Lowtronik under the uP sky on Friday 28 March at 20.30.

another day
Another day is the graphic design studio of Yorick de Vries. Yorick was born in 1985 in Lelystad, the Netherlands. Now he lives and works in Nijmegen. Yorick de Vries has a strong and own developed visual language that speaks and leaves opportunities for interpretation by the eye of the beholder. Yorick de Vries asked Bart van Haren to join forces after a fruitful first collaboration. Bart van Haren, 1988, is living in Rotterdam. He is a conceptual, systematical designer with a passion for the public domain. And this combination, the conceptual systematical design on the one hand and the free, inspiring forms from Yorick de Vries on the other give the designs a tension between two extremes. Another day’s main focus lies in the field of art and culture with a specialisation on typography and printed matter.

riikka aresalo
Riikka Aresalo lives and works in Helsinki, Finland and received her MA degree in Environmental Art from Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Earlier she graduated from Art School Maa in Contemporary Art. By her art works Aresalo tries to analyse the world, a city, a town, it´s structures, phenomenons, hierarchy, visible and invisible, permanent and change, individual walkers in the streets, pairs, groups, teams, communities and mass in an universal level. She wonders when doesn’t know why and investigates what it is all about. A man was born alone into this world, and has to live his life until he dies again alone. But while a man is living a man is living in this world among other people, a man is not alone. Concerning Aresalo´s recent works, they have researched a human being, money and a city, and their relations to each other. The works have been mostly exhibited rather in urban environments than inside the white cube and such interventions enable penetrations in people´s every day living or an attendance as an uninvited guest in a party. But all in all, Aresalo wishes all the luck for a man´s journey.

Paola Bazz approached painting and drawing in her formative years meanwhile graduating in Architecture at Venice University in the early 90s. Paola is inspired by ways to turn recycled materials into large pixels artworks, creating three-dimensional visual effect collages. In her productions Paola uses magazine paper, plastic lids or wood shaped into micro-repetitive elements glued onto cardboard. “Recycling is a sort of re-interpreting, and Art is, in its nature, a recycling project”. Through the re-use and up cycling of products that would otherwise be thrown away, Paola is trying to use their imaginary appeal putting emphasis on the theme of recycling and environmental themes. Paola is based in Manchester, UK. She was born in Padua, Italy and lived in Milan and Brussels.

dionisis christofilogiannis
Studies in Fine Arts at the School of Fine Arts of Cluj Napoca in Romania (MA και PhD), Industrial Design at the Strathclyde University of Scotland, and Mech. Engineering at the Sheffield Hallam University of U.K. He is one of the founders of Daily Lazy Projects (DLP) and coordinator of the White House Biennial (WHB). He has collaborated with visual artists like Nicos Charalambidis, Petra Feriancova, Helidon Gjergji etc, and with Theater directors like Robert Wilson at the National Theater of Athens and Razvan Mazilu at the National Theater in Romania. The relation of past and present (and inevitable: future) in the work of Dionisis Christofilogiannis, is critical for the way he engage the time, reality and art as aesthetic and personal experience. His work equips the viewer with a solitary, lyrical view of contemporary society as contrasted by Greek Mythology, and metaphysical elements as a boundless and personified entity, morality and psychology. Searching for points of interest in the archetypal peaks of art in time past and connecting them with unstable pictures of violent, quiet, even unreal reality, he connects the common elements from each other and points out inevitably a future idol of the world as irony, hope or happiness. Dionisis explores the contemporary meaning of mythology and how such a broad idea becomes re‐focused as a resemblance of the individual. Dionisis purposefully comments upon the reflections of a society under radical change: one that distances itself from the experiences and narratives of its predecessors – including those mythologies real and those imagined. Dionisis deals with painting, video, installation and set design.

One of the things she enjoys the most is making things for her friends and helping them with decoration and DIY. Getting to know more and more about DIY techniques and getting involved with design has inevitably led her to making her own art. My usual technic consists in mixing acrylic and enamel paint, creating contrasts and exclusions between mate and glossy surfaces. It’s about structures, gestures repetitions and articulations, the matter is spread in controlled streams. From an intuitive and distanced approach to the painting, are emerging possibilities, appearing images are confirmed or rerouted by shifts or digressions. I’m mostly using black and white in order to focus both on the graphic and on the illusionist aspect of the painting, it refers at the same time to photography and to calligraphy, contrasts being a significant part of the composition.

I graduated in Graphic Design in the end of 2012, I am 31 years old, living and working in Belo Horizonte city. My work transits through the fields between Art and Graphic Design. Great part of my time is dedicated to fields of study like anthropology, psychology and philosophy. Those are the conceptual bases of my work, likewise great writers like Jorge Luís Borges, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Albert Camus, Machado de Assis and so many others serve as my main inspiration font. I work with mixed media and my visual references are the socio-cultural elements and their contrasts around the globe. I am motivated by the human being and its desires, impulses, imaginary and its dilemmas faced in relation between life and death. I believe in art as a creation of worlds. Art can say with me, say before me, repeat me, attack me, open worlds inside my worlds. The artistic process is a dialogue between formal and material imagination.

theresa himmer
Coming to art through architecture, Theresa Himmer’s project based practice centers round notions of place, context and the dynamics of spatial perception. In works that include conceptual photography, installation and video she employs architectural tropes like the model, the façade, the sign and the structure. With both dicipline and underplayed humor, she uses these to reflect on external socio-political and spatio-cultural dynamics as they uncannily intersect with psychological structures of the Interior. Theresa Himmer was born in 1976 in Denmark. She received her M.Arch. from Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark, her M.F.A from School of Visual Arts New York, and attended the Whitney Museum of American Art, Independent Study Program. I was brought up in Bangor, North Wales but now I live and work in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The core of my work has always been to examine interaction of colour in different systems or situations. By using interaction of colour as a starting point, I’ve developed an interest in architecture, space, virtual realities and landscapes. I am interested in the power of perspective, its illusory quality, its effect on the viewer, and its wider symbolism. Ideas and works originate through visiting sites of architectural interest, taking photographs and playing video games. I cut and paste different layers to create an imaginary perspective, developed by looking at video games. Examining notions of chaos and order, change and dis-location, my work reflect a landscape in a continual flux. Pixels can be read either as flat shapes on the surface of the work, or as receding to imply three dimensions. It’s about intimacy and how people experience the architectural space of the work. It’s the idea of creating space for you to wander, physically and conceptually.

thanos kyriakides (from Blind Adam Project)

BLIND ADAM is an ongoing art project, debuted in 2007, by former fashion editor Thanos Kyriakides. A physical visual impairment challenged him towards a new vision in order to explore and communicate the rich human mysteries from the center of art’s exciting vortex. Inspired by Jean Cocteau’s surreal paradoxes, Giacometti’s austere textural elegance and by the allegoric tale “The Emperor’s new clothes” he creates art forms that propose a new language using assembled hand-knotted wool yarn. The ghostly exoskeletons of garments forming collections presented in acts, explore the boundaries between body, space and exposure. The canvas series through the reference of the Braille system of communication for the blind turn into automatic writing, evoking symbols, a prayerful tactility and yet remain open to various interpretations. All installations are challenging environments; monuments of transcendental meditation, they draw attention to the collective subconscious, by subverting beliefs in established ideas of absence, reality, hallucination and spirituality. In constant search of fascinating new collaborations that occasion for intellectual and emotional reflection, Thanos Kyriakides constructs seductive imaginary worlds that haunt the viewer, inspire creators and foster a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary dialogue.

His explorative drive offers him the possibility of translating the commonness of everyday life into Art and creative gesture. The city and its environment is the area he operates in. His work forms around meetings with people, objects and situations, which they can be material or immaterial in nature, or simple aspects or stimuli coming from the environment he is in. Through his Installation, sculpture and drawing Boris brings reality to the imagination to try and open a poetic space for us to dream and often to experience a ‘political space’, which is conducive to reflection.

Plastic Flowers are a dream pop duo based in Thessaloniki, Greece and were founded in 2011 by George Samaras and Tim Charisis, who was later replaced by Angelos Paschalidis. They are experimenting with tape machines to cut up samples and record their own tracks. Some of their main characteristics is the lo-fi sound and the heavy use of analog synthesizers, reverbed guitars and cheap drum machines. During the past two years they released three EP’s and four singles through Manic Pop records (USA) and Cakes and Tapes (Portugal). All of their albums are pressed on vinyls and cassettes. Their debut LP entitled Evergreen will be released March 3 via Crash Symbols (USA) and Inner Ear Records (Greece). In March 2013 they toured USA, Portugal, UK and also played SXSW 2013 in Austin, TX. Their shows reveal a different side of the group mainly because of the heavy noise and the multiple instrumental outbursts. Their music has been praised by many international press including BBC, The Guardian, VICE, This is Fake DIY, The Line of Best Fit, Impose, MTV, Vogue and others.
